Although he left South Florida for Winter Haven soon after his eighth birthday, Andre Berto has maintained close ties with the area.
Born in Miami to Haitian parents, Berto still makes frequent local visits, but this week’s stop brings added importance.
Berto will make the third defense of his World Boxing Council welterweight title against Colombia’s Juan Urango on Saturday night at Hard Rock Live Arena in Hollywood. The Berto-Urango bout will be the first South Florida title fight since Celestino Caballero’s successful defense of his super-bantamweight belt against Ricardo Castillo at Hard Rock Live in March 2007.
”I still have family here,” Berto said Saturday. “It’s pretty much like coming home.
