Both main event fighters made the 147 lb welterweight limit.
WBO welterweight world champion Miguel Cotto came in at 146 lbs 1 pound under the welterweight limit and Joshua Clottey came in at 147 lbs right at the welterweight limit.
In Clottey’s most recent outing he beat Zab Judah for the IBF welterweight belt vacant. He is now taking on Cotto for the WBO title and a chance to make a big payday.
Cotto has only one defeat and that came to the hands of Mexican slugger Antonio Margarito. The Margarito fight was so brutal many in the boxing world thought Cotto would be physically destroyed from the stoppage loss where his face was left to a bloody pulp.
The Puerto Rican proved people wrong and won another world title when he beat Michael Jennings for the vacant WBO welterweight belt and will now try to defend it against Clottey on Saturday night.
The championship fight will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The fight will be broadcast live on HBO World Championship Boxing. Check your local listings for channel and time.
