Colombian flyweight boxer Carlos Tamara pulled off the upset when he knocked out IBF champion Brian Viloria in front of an almost empty Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines.
Brian Viloria, known as the Hawaiian Punch, is of Filipino decent but grew up in Hawaii and fought for the US Olympic team in 2000.
Viloria used to train at Wild Card boxing club with Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach but now trains with Robert Garcia who also trains fellow Filipino American boxer Nonito Donaire.
Viloria was winning the early rounds before he started gassing out toward the championship rounds. Tamara gained a second wind and with his new found burst of energy fought until the referee Bruce McTavish halted the fight at 1:45 of the 12th and final round.
Tamara pulled of a valiant come from behind victory and finally won the title in his third attempt at a championship belt.
This was Brian Viloria’s third loss and his first by stoppage TKO.
