HBO Boxing After Dark was scheduled to air a two-fight double header, featuring junior welterweight slugger, Marcos “Chino” Maidana and Victor Cayo as the main event, and an IBF lightweight title rematch between Ali Funeka and Joan Guzman as the co-feature.
According to Boxingscene.com and Fightnews, the co-feature IBF lightweight title bout between Ali Funeka (30-2-3, 25 KOs) and Joan Guzman (29-0-1, 17 KOs) is pending because Joan Guzman came in at 144 pounds, 9-pounds over the 135-pound lightweight limit while his opponent came in at the lightweight limit of 135.
A deal was temporarily made between both camps so the fight could remain – Joan Guzman will be fined 25% of his purse for failing to make weight, Guzman cannot weigh more than 150 lbs tomorrow morning at 7 a.m., and Funeka mustn’t weigh more than 145 lbs. If Ali Funeka won the fight, he would receive the vacant IBF title, if Guzman wins he will go home empty handed.
Gary Shaw, the promoter of Funeka, later reneged and said the fight was off, unless, the IBF guarantees his fighter still be ranked number one contender by the IBF should he lose against the overweight Guzman.
Shaw will talk with the Funeka camp to see whether or not they would like to continue.
