On April 13, 2010 HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel examines the controversial deaths of popular champion boxers Arturo Gatti, Vernon Forrest and Alexis Arguello.
The episode deals entirely with boxing, three correspondents for Real Sports investigate the untimely deaths of the boxing legends.
John Frankel, travels to Brazil to take a closer look at the supposed suicide death of Arturo Gatti. This is by far the most controversial of the deaths, because many people question the actual cause of death. The death of Gatti was first ruled a murder by Brazilian police, and his wife Amanda was the key suspect, later it was ruled a suicide after Brazilian coroners did their own autopsy of the body.
Frank Deford covers the sad death of heroic Nicaraguan boxing figure, Alexis Arguello. Arguello, 57, committed suicide by shooting himself in the heart back in July of 2009. Arguello’s son doesn’t believe his father who had battled depression and drug addiction in the past killed himself. Deford will search for answers to why Arguello a warrior inside of the ring would take his own life.
Bryant Gumbel will examine the tragic circumstances surrounding Vernon Forrest s death in Atalanta, Georgia. Vernon Forrest was known as one of boxing’s good guys, he took care of mentally challenged individuals and carried himself with class outside of the ring. Forrest died while chasing down some thugs who robbed him at gun point, he was shot in the back multiple times.
Ironically all three former boxing champions died in the month of July 2009.
