First to air will be the co-main event Lucian Bute vs. Edison “Pantera” Miranda, broadcast from Montreal, Quebec, Canada . Bute will defend his IBF super-middleweight title against the tough Colombian power puncher Edison Miranda.
Bute is undefeated with a record of (25-0, 20 KOs) and the favorite going into the fight with Miranda. Bute is coming off a dominant 4th round knockout victory over the iron chinned Librado Andrade last November.
Miranda is best known for his heavy hands as evidenced when he broke the jaw of former IBF middleweight champion King Athur Abraham in their first match, Miranda went onto lose that fight by decision and the rematch by TKO in 4. Miranda also fought HBO headliner Kelly Pavlik, and lost by TKO in 7.
The main event will feature middleweight champion Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik as he puts his WBC and WBO titles on the line when he faces WBC light-middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Pavlik is looking to bounce back after a loss to Bernard Hopkins at 170-lbs catch-weight and a long inactivity due to hand injuries.
Sergio Martinez had one of the most exciting fights of 2009 when he lost a close decision to Paul “The Punisher” Williams. Martinez is a natural 154-pounder and will be the much smaller man when he takes on Pavlik, but many boxing analysts say Martinez movement and slick southpaw style will give Pavlik plenty of trouble.
Before and immediately after the HBO double header, HBO will air 24/7 “Mayweather-Mosley” episode 2.
Watch the HBO Boxing Championship double-header “Pavlik-Martinez” / “Bute-Miranda” on Saturday, April 17 at 10 pm ET/ 7 pm PT only on HBO.
