It’s no secret that boxing is a sport filled with a controversial and corrupt past. But in this day and age when your every move is followed by the media it’s hard to avoid slipping up, because when you do, it will be all over the internet.
Floyd Mayweather Jr., recently made and apologized for a UStream video where he attacked Manny Pacquiao saying he would whoop his butt. A lot of people were claiming the video was racist, but the video was far from racist, idiotic, yes, but racist, no.
Floyd Mayweather used ethnic slurs, but it’s obvious he isn’t a black supremacist or racist person, only thing he is guilty of is being ignorant and not using the proper choice of words for his rant.
A lot of people think Floyd Mayweather’s comments are hurting the sport of boxing, but his UStream rant only hurt his image and not the sports. It made Floyd look bad not the sport.
On the other hand, Manny Pacquiao fighting disgraced Mexican boxer, Antonio Margarito, is actually hurting boxing’s image. Antonio Margarito is no longer relevant in boxing, the man didn’t even earn his shot, he has been suspended for a year and gets a huge fight in his first fight back in the States. He is a shamed boxer, who got caught loading his gloves before his knockout loss to Sugar Shane Mosley.
What Manny Pacquiao and Bob Arum are doing is an injustice to the sport of boxing, and it’s a shameless act to reward a man who loaded his gloves with a huge fight with Manny Pacquiao and a multimillion dollar payday, win or lose.
Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao and Margarito, stands by Margarito’s claim that he didn’t know what his trainer was putting inside his handwraps, but Manny Pacquiao, doesn’t share his promoters view. Pacquiao told media during the Pacquiao vs. Margarito press tour that he believes Antonio knew what his trainer was putting his gloves and he is okay with giving Antonio Margarito a shot because he deserves a second chance.
If Pacquiao truly believes Margarito loaded his gloves, why is he willing to give this man a second chance and reward him? If Mosley’s trainer, Nazim Richardson, never discovered those plaster inserts in Margarito’s handwraps before the Shane Mosley fight, Magarito could have possibly killed Mosley in the ring or caused career ending damage to him.
In boxing, tampering with handwraps and loading gloves are considered unforgivable sins.
While the boxing community is focused on Floyd Mayweather’s racist UStream rant, they are forgetting the ultimate disgrace is happening on November 13, 2010.
