The WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez delivered one of the most devastating one punch knockouts in a title fight when he knocked the 6 foot 2 inch former welterweight champion Paul Williams in their rematch on HBO at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Saturday night November 20th.
The fight only lasted two rounds, but Martinez predicted he wouldn’t let the fight go to the judges this time and he was going for the knockout and he delivered on his promise, when he threw a sneaky over hand left on the chin of Williams that sounded like a bomb blast causing Williams to fall flat on his fast out cold and lifeless. Williams was out cold for several minutes with his eyes wide open before he awoke with the help of the ringside medical staff.
Martinez retained his middleweight title and makes a strong case for “Fighter of the Year” along with “Knockout of the Year”.
Before this fight Williams was overlooking Martinez by telling reporters he could still make the 147-pound weight limit and fight Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr. smaller guys who’ve already climbed several weight divisions.
The Sergio Martinez vs. Paul Williams rematch will be replayed on HBO on Sunday and on HBO ON DEMAND, check your cable and TV guide for replay dates.
