When will people wake up and realize that Bob Arum enjoys feeding his star boxers handpicked opposition making them look greater than they really are.
Manny Pacquiao the greatest media hyped fighter since Gerry Cooney, is now officially fighting Shane Mosley who is almost 40-years-old, and it’s also rumored that the washed up brawler from Nicaragua Ricardo Mayorga is going to fight Miguel Cotto.
I can give a pass to Miguel Cotto, he deserves an easy fight after the beatings he took from two suspect fighters. And that fight would be very intriguing to watch because Mayorga really knows how to play the bad guy role, the pre-fight presser with Mayorga’s trash talking will be enough to hype that fight. I don’t have a problem with Cotto actually fighting Mayorga. I would rather see Antonio Margarito versus Mayorga better because both guys are cholo types with machismo and would talk major trash to build up the fight.
But a guy like Manny Pacquiao, who Bob Arum claims is greater than Muhammad Ali, shouldn’t be fighting old man Shane Mosley. If you are so great why are you fighting washed up fighters? This is a slap in the face to the sport of boxing and to the fans by Bob Arum and by Manny Pacquiao himself, the so called “Peoples Champ.”
The highly respectable Yahoo boxing writer Kevin Iole exposed Bob Arum and Pacquiao in his recent article “Arum’s spin on Pacquiao-Mosley is pure garbage” in the article Iole showed the world how much of spin artist Arum is, something hardcore boxing fans already knew.
Here is a portion from Iole’s piece showing an actual quote from an article by Micheal Marley of Sports Illustrated after Mosley’s lackluster fight with Sergio Mora, where Bob Arum himself completely disregards a possible Shane Mosley vs. Pacquiao fight:
“I read them saying Mosley was huffing and puffing for air in the fourth or fifth round,” Arum told Marley. “To me, that is the real tipoff for an aging fighter. Even Big George Foreman did that in his 40s, but he always had that big, big punch, like in the (Michael) Moorer fight. What I’ve read is not very supportive to make any Mosley-Pacquiao bout. Look, he’s going to be 40 and he’s in the lighter weights, where speed is so important. He’s on a show with guys … old enough to be his son.
“I guess Shane needs the money due to his (divorce). I’ve always considered Shane to be a nice guy but this is what happens to fighters when they age. It’s like (Bernard) Hopkins: He still knows how to fight, but who wants to pay to see him now? His fights are not very scintillating. What you see with Hopkins, we’re beginning to see with Mosley.”
Hardcore boxing fans aren’t dumb, but the casual fans will buy any Manny Pacquiao fight the same way they bought any Mike Tyson fight because of they want to see someone get beat up even if it’s a tomato can.
The only fans who agree with this fight are the blind Manny Pacquiao fanatics. These fans agree with everything Manny does, and never question him at all, he is infallible and can do no wrong in their eyes. They will respond to you with racist and vulgar insults if you say something in opposition of their idol.
I’ve stated it before in the past that Manny Pacquiao doesn’t have any real skill, he is not a good example of the sweet science of boxing. Pacquiao is just a come forward brawler who throws a lot of punches with no defense, he catches punches with his face, and doesn’t know how to fight going backwards. A real scientist is someone like Floyd Mayweather Jr who rarely gets hit but can slip and parry punches controlling his opponent with only a few shots thrown each round. Mayweather is an artist while Manny Pacquiao is just a painter.
Manny hasn’t fought a fast counter puncher or fresh fighter coming off a winning streak in years. He only fights guys with no head movement, slow hands, slow feet, and are weight drained. Pacquiao is the man who handpicked Mosley for himself, Bob Arum already exposed his fighter by telling the media he gave Manny the list of opponents and it was ultimately up to Manny who he would want next.
Stop thinking Manny Pacquiao is this humble peoples champion when he isn’t, he is a politician who uses his good guy image to fool people into ordering his fights and giving them his votes.
I hope Shane Mosley pulls off the upset, to teach Bob Arum and Manny Pacquiao a lesson for picking on weaker older opponents. A real fighter with valor wants to test himself against a tough fighter, someone who will give them a challenge, someone dangerous like an Andre Berto or Sergio Martinez, not a faded legend like Mosley.
