Veteran boxing promoter, Don King, promotes the entertaining trash talking boxer Ricardo Mayorga and has him signed up to fight against Bob Arum’s 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto on March 12, 2011 in Las Vegas. Cotto will be a tough task for Mayorga, who is coming off one tune up fight and a long layoff from boxing.
But King’s real intention is to make a fight between Ricardo Mayorga and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao because that is the fight that Mayorga told King he wants the most.
According to an ESPN article by Dan Rafael, Ricardo Mayorga took the fight with Miguel Cotto because he believes by beating Miguel Cotto it would land him a shot at Bob Arum’s cash cow Manny Pacquiao.
“It’s going to be something exciting and a thrill for me to give Bob one when Mayorga beats his man,” King said. “He deserves it. Bob’s been working hard. A little punch in Bob’s kidney wouldn’t hurt. He still has Manny Pacquiao, though, and that’s who we after. Bob said he can’t speak for Pacquiao, but when we get through with Cotto, that’s who we want. That’s why Mayorga took this fight, because he wants to beat Cotto and then get a shot at Pacquiao.
“He gave himself a hard task. Should he overcome this, the reward would be going after Pacquiao. So we’re going to try to put a little spark into Bob’s life.” King told ESPN.com.
It seems every fighter in boxing wants a shot at Manny Pacquiao because of the payday and the chance to make history by beating the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, but Manny has his hands full come May 7th when he takes on the hard hitting Sugar Shane Mosley in Las Vegas. Pacquiao has to take care of Mosley before thinking about other fights.
