2011 is here and we know for sure Manny Pacquiao will be facing #5 ranked welterweight fighter Shane Mosley on May 7th. Manny Pacquiao is the #1 ranked welterweight fighter and currently hold the position as the #1 ranked pound for pound fighter in the world. Currently #2 ranked pound for pound fighter in the world is held by recently troubled fighter, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Floyd Mayweather Jr is facing charges stemming from his alleged assaulted of his ex girlfriend and mother of his children, Josie Harris. Also included in the charges is larceny, when Floyd Mayweather Jr took Ms. Harris’s Iphone. The charges could sentence him to lengthy time in prison up to 34 years. It did not end there, recently Floyd Mayweather Jr had a run in with a security guard who issued a parking ticket to Floyd Mayweather Jr. In anger, Floyd Mayweather Jr poked a different security guard near the eye which resulted assault charges levied against Floyd Mayweather Jr again. These trouble with the law will certainly affect the chances of a megafight with Manny Pacquiao. It may put the knife into the heart and possibly end the chances of the two best fighters in the world to finally settle who is the best fighter in the world. The megafight would have certainly been the most lucrative fight in boxing history.
So, if Floyd Mayweather Jr does not fight in 2011 due to his personal problem’s, should Floyd be dropped in the top 10 pound for pound rankings? The Superstar believes he should be dropped. Make Sergio Martinez as #2 and Juan Manuel Marquez as #3. It would be 1 1/2 years Floyd did not fight, and inactivity will certainly hurt your position in the pound for pound rankings. Too add, in my opinion as of this moment, Sergio Martinez deserves the #2 ranking for pound for pound. Floyd at best should be at #4, below Juan Manuel Marquez who should be #3. There is a saying “Boxing waits for nobody” and it certainly did not wait for Ali when his license to box was revoked. It did not wait for Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson when they served their country in WWIII. Floyd Mayweather Jr should not be too upset when he is removed from the pound for pound rankings, he did say “legacy don’t pay bills”.
