Part of being the complete package is having good looks to match your athletic ability. Manny Pacquiao doesn’t have the matinee idol looks or personality that female sports fans find attractive.
The fans who mainly order his fights are either Filipinos or Latinos. Filipinos order Manny’s fights because they want to support their countrymen and Latinos order Manny’s fights because they are boxing fans who like Pacquiao’s brawling style of boxing.
But if you want to be a true crossover star in the United States you have to have the Matinee idol good looks to match the talent.
Look at the majority of the top draw superstars in boxing history and you will notice the majority of them were handsome with charisma and had a large female following.
Muhammad Ali aka The greatest heavyweight boxer of all time – He was brash, he was funny, charming and very good looking. Women are attracted to pretty boys who can kick butt and Ali was proof of that, he had so many women throwing themselves at him from all over the world.
Sugar Ray Leonard – Another charismatic and good looking fighter who was an instant star right after winning the Olympic gold medal.
Oscar De La Hoya aka The Golden Boy – He was a true boxing superstar, he had the talent, the inspiring back story, the Olympic Gold and the good looks that attracted female fans in droves to watch his fights.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. aka Pretty Boy – The current top draw in boxing, he has a lot of haters mostly jealous men who can’t stand a cocky pretty boy like Floyd. Floyd has the looks and million dollar smile to go with his boxing skills. He has more female fans than Manny Pacquiao and it’s mainly do to his looks and charisma, women love the rich good looking badboys.
If you ask any female in America if they know who Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is they will give you a blank stare, but many of them will know who Floyd Mayweather Jr is.
Manny Pacquiao is the exception to the rule. He was only able to get high pay per view buyrates due to the fact that a lot of Filipinos and Latinos are ordering his fights, he hasn’t been able to capture the audience from middle America or the female crowd like the fighters I mentioned above which is the true sign of being a boxing superstar.
