I have deep appreciation for boxers who have supreme talents and as a lover of the sport I cannot discredit either Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr as being scared to fight each other.
We must remember that these men are fighters at the end of the day and this is what they do for a living is fight in the ring with their fists. Every time Pacquiao and Mayweather get in the ring they risk their lives and also put themselves in harms way — all it takes is one punch or one fight and your health could be permanently damaged.
The main goal of a boxer is to inflict the most damage to their opponent without receiving as much in return, it is the art of hit and not get hit.
To believe that long time boxers who grew up fighting since they were young teenagers are scared to fight one another is a very ridiculous comment made by fans of either fighter. I don’t share the type of hatred or bias a Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather fan has towards each other.
I think the reason the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight hasn’t been made has to do with outside influences. Bob Arum is trying to milk Manny Pacquiao before he retires and the moment Manny is near the end of his career Arum will try and match Manny up with one of his younger upcoming fighters whom might catch Manny and beat him so the torch is passed and Arum is left with another boxing star to help carry his promotions. Arum might feel that after Manny fights Floyd, Manny will retire and go into politics for good, and Arum is left without a cash cow.
On Floyd’s side I think Floyd has more fear losing his undefeated record than he has of fighting Manny Pacquiao. Floyd knows that his claim to greatness is his zero loss record, so he feels if he loses to Pacquiao his legacy will be diminished. Also, Floyd’s father is probably advising his son not to fight Manny Pacquiao for fear that his son might get a bad beating by the Filipino southpaw. It’s a father’s instinct to protect his son and that’s what Floyd Senior is doing.
Many people believe that Floyd Mayweather Jr is waiting for the right time when to fight Manny Pacquiao and I can honestly say that seems like a very possible scenario. Floyd knows that his record is on the line and as a smart strategist he will attack when the moment is right. To protect his undefeated record he must wait till he see’s some vulnerability in Manny Pacquiao. This doesn’t necessarily mean he is scared, it just means he is trying to guarantee a victory, which is a very smart and wily strategy. Freddie Roach and Arum are also using this same strategy by putting Manny against the best possible opponents that bring in the most money with the least risk.
This is the business side of boxing. Fighters are the promoters investments, so they must do everything they can to prevent their money making star from losing in order to sustain maximum profit.
