The easiest thing in sports is to look back and comment after the fact (hindsight is always 20/20). So that’s what I do. Here are my random thoughts on Donaire, MJ, and a host of other news and reports on a busy boxing weekend.
Donaire KO Montiel in 2
- That KO from Nonito Donaire was downright scary. Absolutely thudding shot that ended the fight. Will he now get big fights because he is a name or have trouble landing opponents because people want to avoid him.
- What the heck was the referee thinking letting Montiel continue even for a second. I get you give the champ a chance but when the dude’s legs are having spasms and he is shaking on the ground don’t count or let him get up, wave it off and get the doctor for crying out loud
Philly boy Mike Jones runs circles around Soto Karass
- Hate to say I told you so but, I told you so (check the preview article on Jones vs. Soto Karass by yours truly)
- Jones too fast, too skilled, too well prepared, and too darn good for Soto Karass
- Only way Jones was losing was by doing something dumb like the last fight but he learned his lesson and that was not happening again
- Do some people just have harder heads and tougher minds than everyone else? How else do you explain Soto Karass eating that much leather to the head and body and keeps on coming. I will watch that guy fight anyone because you know it will be fun
Sturm retains title KO over Hearns in 6
- Here is all I have to say about this fight. When I sent the article about the fight to my editor to post this is what I wrote in the email
o I wasted an hour of my life watching the Felix Sturm-Ronald Hearns fight on ESPN 3. While I had already wasted an hour figured I may as well take 20 more minutes to write something
o Enough said about that fight
Calderon vs. Segura part II
- It was announced that the two best really little men in boxing will go again in a rematch of their all action fight last year this time in Segura’s home country of Mexico
- This is so often a phrase used by athletes by I am stealing it here. Get your popcorn and beverages ready. If you missed the first one or don’t bother watching because these guys fight at 112lbs then you are missing out
- I watched the first fight and convinced a few of my buddies to watch as well. They were awe struck at the skill of Calderon, relentless tenacity of Segura, and the overall action of the fight
- My only concern is with Calderon being a year older what has changed that will make the result any different. The end could come a lot faster this time but still will be exciting while it lasts
- Of course I could be wrong, Calderon may choose to move more and box circles around Segura which is what I thought would happen in the first fight
Friday Night Fights
- I continue to be impressed by Fernando Guerrero. He has all the tools and really draws a crowd that loves him in Salisbury, MD
- Maybe I am not seeing it but I continue not to be impressed with Shawn Porter. I just don’t see him winning when he steps up in competition
