It has been made official that Tomasz Adamek 43-1 (28 KO) will take on Kevin McBride 35-8-1 (29 KO) on April 23. Previously it was being proposed that this fight would take place in Adamek’s native home of Poland but it will be staged at the Prudential Center in Newark NJ where Adamek has drawn large crowds in previous fights and he has a loyal fan base.
Adamek already has signed contracts with the Klitschko’s to fight one of the brothers later in the year in September. McBride will provide Adamek with a tune up fight against another tall heavyweight. The Irish McBride who will be the biggest man Adamek has ever fought, is best known for his sixth round knockout of Mike Tyson which was Iron Mike’s last bout before retiring.
Kathy Duva, CEO Main Events and Adamek’s promoter said.in the press release “We’ll now focus on McBride, and then focus all of our efforts into the big one in September,” referring to Adamek’s fight later in the year vs. a brother Klitschko.
The deal to fight either brother gives Adamek a safety net in case one brother loses with each having a bout scheduled prior to a possible Adamek fight. Vitali takes on Odlanier Solis on March 19 and Wladimir will fight Dereck Chisora April 30. Both fights are scheduled to occur in Germany. If either brother loses Adamek faces the brother that won the interim bout. If both brothers win their fights the Klitschko’s have the choice of which one will fight Adamek.
While McBride may not be an overly skilled fighter he provides a good tune up for Adamek. It will place Tomasz in the ring with someone of comparable size while likely providing a safe fight that should not jeopardize the large purse he will earn for fighting a Klitschko.
