By Superstar Billy Graham
According to Sergio Martinez this is what he thinks about the current pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao, “While he (Manny Pacquiao) continues to fight with opponents who have no chance of winning, and I continue to fight against the best – one day I will (become the best pound for pound). Source
Sergio Martinez goes on saying he will fight better opponents. Beating better fighters like Serhiy Dzinziruk who is #8 ranked light middleweight fighter while Sergio Martinez is ranked #1 in the middleweight division. Did Sergio forget that little tidbit? Did The Superstar forget to say Dzinziruk has never fought at middleweight? When Sergio was asked numerous times if he will go up one weight class and face top fighters of that division which will be Andre Ward, Lucian Bute, Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, and Andre Dirrell. Surprisingly, the answer Sergio gave didn’t ring true on what he said recently which according to Sergio is to “continue to fight the best”. Fight the best of the lower division? Or take on the more challenging and treacherous weight class which is the super middleweight.
In fact it would be an easy transition for Sergio Martinez to go up one weight class. On his recent fight with Serhiy Dizinziruk, on the night of the fight Sergio weighed in at 170 lbs which would be in the light heavyweight division. On the night of the fight Serhiy Dzinziruk weighed in at 167 lbs which is 1 lb less than the super middleweight limit of 168. Come on Sergio, if you start talking big, thinking of loftier goals you have to start by NOT CHALLENGING SMALLER FIGHTERS FROM SMALLER DIVISIONS.
It is quite obvious why Sergio Martinez is challenging Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, for the big pay day they will bring. It is a guaranteed over $3 million pay day which would be his biggest pay day ever. It could go even more depending on pay per view buys. But if Sergio wants to prove to everyone he is best and rightfully named the best fighter in the world, he must go up one weight class and face the top 5. Until then, he will always be playing second fiddle against Manny.
What is interesting now, there is some rumor going around if Manny does not beat Shane Mosley convincingly, Sergio Martinez will take Manny’s place as the # 1 pound for pound fighter in the world. Not only Manny has to win but he must win impressively and convincingly, it seems they have to stack more obstacles against Manny to stay on top. However, some people in Ring Magazine like Nigel Collins should be reminded Dzinziruk is #8 ranked light middleweight fighter and Sergio Martinez is the #1 ranked middleweight champion. While Manny is fighting Shane Mosley who is in the same weight division and ranked #5 in the welterweight division. And if Sergio really wants to take the ultimate challenge, go down to 147 and face Manny Pacquiao at his best weight class. Sergio will never agree to that. So Sergio should forget it and finally go up to super middleweight.
