Young rising Mexican boxing star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (35-0-1,26 KOs) takes on Matthew Hatton (41-4-2, 16 KOs) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California for the vacant WBC Junior-Middleweight title that was previously held by Manny Pacquiao.
The weigh-ins for the event were marred with a bit of controversy when Canelo failed to make the agreed upon catchweight of 150-pounds (WBC Junior-Middleweight limit is 154) and came in over 1.8 pounds. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was fined 20 percent of his $350,000 fight purse when he failed a second time to make weight, and half of his earnings for tonight’s fight will go to his opponent Matthew Hatton.
Also on the HBO broadcast is a co-feature between two top level Super-Featherweights Daniel Ponce de Leon (41-2, 34 KOs) vs. Adrien Broner (19-0, 16 KOs). Ponce de Leon was a terror at the Junior-Featherweight division of 122-pounds and known for his powerful punches and pressure, but difficulty in making weight prompted his move to 126 and now 130-pound divisions. Broner also known as ‘The Problem’ comes from Cincinnati, Ohio and is a highly touted boxing prospect, who used to fight at 135-pounds but is looking to make his mark at 130 .
