I’ve grown up most of my entire life in the United States. In those times I’ve seen how some Americans mistreated the Filipino race as well as other ethnic groups. I’ve witnessed racist accounts at schools, in the public, as well as places of employments. But my lasting experiences were when the teacher was the perpetrator of the racist act and was also a minority. In Hawaii, where I grew up, the majority of the teachers were Japanese. Many of them were racist and it reflected in how they treated the Filipino students. The most blatant racist was an automotive repair teacher whose name was Sasaki. At the time, I did not have the maturity and knowledge to defend myself against an authority figure. Every class was started with the teacher speaking mockingly in a Filipino accent. The other students would laugh while the teacher carried on. There were many racial acts and deeds by the Japanese teachers that I personally witnessed. In those days, these type of racial acts were part of the culture and we took it and just learned to live with it.
Now another minority group also attacks the Filipinos. Today we have videos where Floyd Mayweather Jr. is lobbing racist rants against one of our own, Manny Pacquiao. We don’t have to empower and enrich those who belittles us. Unlike yesteryear, we no longer have to cower down and accept the attacks. Money is power, and as long as racist people are being enriched with our own money they will continue to be so. And it doesn’t take much to fight back and hurt the racist where it counts the most and where it will do the most good. In their pockets.
Roger Mayweather makes a racist comments that alludes that Pacquiao would get whoop by Mayweather Jr if he didn’t take anything illegal. Without any proof, Roger is alluding that an Asian’s success, being Manny Pacquiao, is due to taking illegal substance and not from hard work and natural ability. How many Blacks have been caught using steroids, how many Asians have been caught using steroids? It is as if Roger is saying that the the only way that an Asian can reach the very the top level of boxing is by cheating. Roger says that Mayweather don’t need something in him to win, but for Pacquiao to win is a different story.
All it takes on our part is to wait one week. Wait one week and see the replay instead of enriching Mayweather by buying his next PPV fight. Of course there are many who will not partake in a boycott. They would rather have others do the right thing and just take the ride along. To those I say to look at their kids, grand kids, brothers, sisters, mother, father, and countryman. As long as your money enriches people like Mayweather, they will victimize someone you know somewhere down the the line. It may not hurt you personally at the moment, but someone you know will be a victim of a racist, maybe your child, maybe your grandchildren.
I’ve seen Filipinos fight back when they are being attacked on the internet. While the older generations took it, the newer generations are hitting with a volley with what was lobbed at them. But the most effective volley against racism is not being a consumer of the product from a racist person or involving yourself with racists. Mayweather could not care less at the profanity and insult being directed at him as long as you are putting money in his pocket. That money that you placed in his wallet is what enables him to carry on with his immoral and racist behavior.
Do you want to get back at Mayweather in the worst way? You know where it will hurt him the most. Now it’s just a matter of doing it. And it is as easy as doing nothing for one week.
There was a lot of internet traffic against the Erik Morales versus Juan Manuel Marquez fight that they decided to kill the fight all together. I believe that the collective of all the Filipinos buzzing the internet with a boycott can kill the fight and hurt Mayweather in his pocket. If, and I stress if, the Mayweather/Ortiz fight is canceled, it started here. I’ve gauged the internet traffic and there is a lot of displeasure from the Filipinos toward Mayweather. Maybe it’s time for a payback that works. Tell someone you know.
One week of waiting is all we need to succeed. Do not empower and enrich someone to use it against you.
