This years nominees for the 2011 ESPN ESPY award for “Fighter of the Year” include stand outs from the world of boxing and mixed martial arts.
The boxers that are nominated for Fighter of the Year are:
8 weight division champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao who won his recording setting 8th weight division title when he defeated Antonio Margarito for the WBC 154-pound junior middleweight belt and beating Sugar Shane Mosley in May of 2011 by unanimous decision.
Bernard Hopkins beat 28-year-old Jean Pascal for the WBC 175-pound light heavyweight title, becoming the oldest boxer in the history of the sport to win a major title at the age of 46, the previous holder of that record was heavyweight champion George Foreman who won the title at 45-years-old.
Sergio Martinez defending his middleweight title by knocking out Paul Williams in the second round of their rematch. Martinez followed up with a sensational TKO win over Sergei Dzinziruk, also winning the prestigious BWAA awards for KO of the Year and Fighter of the Year.
The remaining nominees are MMA fighters from the Ultimate Fighting Championship. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre.
Of all of this years nominees Manny Pacquiao is the only fighter to win the ESPY award for “Fighter of the Year”
