The best punch to use against a southpaw is the straight right hand, and Juan Manuel Marquez just knocked out Likar Ramos with one in the first round. The right hand that Marquez hit Ramos with was so hard, it had a delayed reaction and Ramos was out cold once his back touched the canvas.
This same right hand that Juan Manuel Marquez landed on Likar Ramos is the same weapon that he used to dominate Manny Pacquiao in their previous fights. Pacquiao was getting tagged over and over by Marquez’ straight right, and tonight we saw that Juan has built up power and will only get stronger as he prepares for Pacquiao.
I have a funny feeling that if Manny Pacquiao was watching this fight live and saw the KO by Marquez, he will have second thoughts about taking on JMM for a third time. We might even see Pacquiao avoid him again and pull out of the fight due to a “congressional scheduling conflict” and fight someone like Paul Williams or Andre Berto later on.
Precision and landing the punch right on the button can put any man away, and Marquez is one of the most precise punchers in boxing. Pacquiao is an easy target to hit and he’s avoided Marquez for so long. The first time around, Marquez gave him a tough fight and they fought to a draw, and it took 4 years just for Freddie Roach and Manny to give Marquez a rematch, they were waiting for him to get older and slower, and, now, after a few more years they are finally facing him again, and expected him not have any power above 135 pounds but they were proven wrong tonight.
If Marquez shows this type of power and adds lean muscle, I don’t see Manny Pacquiao having any shot at him. The only way for Manny to defeat Marquez is if Marquez suddenly ages completely and cannot pull the trigger. But a top conditioned Marquez will always school Pacquiao because intelligent skill almost always beats brute force, that is what the sweet science is all about.
