Marcos Maidana hits hard, has an average chin, and posses some toughness. But that is about it. He can’t hit a moving target. His defensive skills are sub par, and have limited talent. He is predictable in that he fights his best going forward and applying pressure against his opponent.
Guerrero will be on the move when he fights Maidana. By now, people should know that Maidana’s strength is fighting a stationary target. Erik Morlaes on the other hand gave Maidana problems my moving and used angles to nullify Maidana’s pressure attack.
Maidana made his name by making Victor Ortiz quit in the 7th round in their fight. Ortiz went into Maidana’s strength, he stayed in front of Maidana and tried to slug it out with him. Ortiz was too young and inexperience then and he is still that today.
Don’t look for any kind of knockout in this fight. As long as Guerrero keeps moving and don’t make a mistake by trying for a KO, he will win by UD. The kind of fight will be dictated by what Guerrero does. It can be exciting if he decides to be more combative. But mostly likely, he will take the safe route, go on the move, and pick his spots using the jab to keep Maidana at bay.
Maidana is taller by one inch at 5’9”. They both have an 70” reach. Maidana has an 84% KO rate while Robert has a 54% KO rate. Guerrero is 29-1 with 18 KO. Maidana is 30-2 with 27 KO.
Of course Maidana will have his moment when he is able to corner Guerrero somewhere along the fight. But it will be few. Guerrero is too cautious a fighter to let Maidana have too much opportunity to score with some big punches. Geurrero will be more cautious than usual due to Maidana’s power. So I don’t see Guerrero throwing as many punches as he did in his fight against Michael Katsidis of Australia.
This fight will have you waiting for something big to happen, it will give you a taste of excitement here and there, but you will be left wanting. You’ll feel that a KO is coming but it won’t happen. The winner will get a fight with Amir Khan. That should be incentive for both fighters to make this fight relatively exciting.
