I am sorry Bob, but I have to disagree with you big time.
Manny Pacquiao is not the most popular or one of the most athlete’s in the world, and this is just another way of Bob Arum exaggerating his fighters popularity.
You may remember Bob Arum saying before every Manny Pacquiao fight that they will break pay-per-view records only to do lower than expected.
The only people who know who Manny Pacquiao is are Filipinos, Mexicans, and boxing fans in general. Pacquiao is not even famous in Asia or with other Asian-Americans in the United States, because if he was followed by non Filipino Asians like Chinese, Koreans and Japanese, his pay-per-view numbers would be close to 2 million buys or more per fight. Most of my Chinese friends and family don’t even follow boxing! A true sign of popularity is transcending a sport, meaning people who don’t even follow your sport know who you are and I’ve never seen any non-boxing fans know who Manny Pacquiao is — most people can’t even pronounce his name.
The most popular active boxer in the world right now is Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr., not Manny “Pac-man” Pacquiao. The proof is there, the numbers do not lie — Floyd has beaten Manny Pacquiao in pay-per-view numbers and earnings.
Just compare Manny Pacquiao’s Twitter and Facebook pages to Floyd Mayweather’s Twitter and Facebook pages, and you can see Floyd Mayweather is more popular with more followers.
Also, Floyd Mayweather has star quality, he has the looks, the personality, the talent, the money, that attracts the females to follow him. Manny Pacquiao lacks the looks, personality, talent, and money that Floyd has, and it shows because Manny doesn’t have the amount of gorgeous female fans following him that Pretty boy Floyd has. I’ve said it before, and I will say it again, some of the biggest crossover boxing stars were all good looking men, Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya, and Floyd Mayweather Jr..
Another proof that Manny Pacquiao is not very popular is his HP touch pad commercial:
I believed because of this commercial, the HP touch pad failed as a product, it probably turned off a lot of Americans who didn’t know who Manny Pacquiao is and couldn’t understand a word coming out of his mouth.
When Floyd Mayweather Jr. fights Victor Ortiz his pay-per-view buys will be close to 2 million. The Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight will probably do 1 million buys, a big number but he will not outdo Floyd.
So don’t buy into the lies, Manny Pacquiao is not one of the most popular athletes in the world, he isn’t even the most popular active boxer, that honor goes to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
