I went to see how the Victor Ortiz vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight was doing at the box office. I visited some web sites that were selling the tickets and I was not surprised that there were plenty of tickets available. There is little interest in the fight.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. (FMJ) claims that he chose not to fight Amir Khan because Khan is not a Pay-Per-View attraction. Of course it’s another BS excuse to avoid fighting a legitimate opponent. If FMJ’s contention about the PPV was true, then he would not be fighting Victor Ortiz. When did Ortiz all of a sudden become a PPV attraction?
FMJ is now saying to not blame him if the fight between himself and Ortiz does not sell well. He is saying that HBO is doing a bad job at hyping . . . err . . promoting the fight by focusing too much on Victor’s past life struggles.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is trying his best to generate interest for the upcoming fight. But unlike previous opponents, his chosen opponent this time around does not have a huge fan base. Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, Sugar Shane Mosley, and to a lesser extent Juan Manuel Marquez, all had a good fan base. Against Victor Ortiz, FMJ will shoulder a huge majority of drawing in the fans.
This fight will prove the true drawing power of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Even though Manny Pacquiao is a foreigner, he has stood step by step in PPV sales with FMJ. If Manny Pacquiao was a US citizen it would not even be close, Pacquiao would completely outsell FMJ in every aspect of marketing.
Sorry Floyd, I think people have come to understand your fights. You flap your big lips and say how you’re going to beat on your opponent, then you bore everyone by throwing a few punches per round. You stink up the joint wherever you fight.
Your fight is around 10 days away and there are plenty of tickets still left. Meanwhile, Pacquiao’s fight with Juan Manuel Marquez barely started off the ground and it’s almost sold out. Of course FMJ is now constantly mentioning Pacquiao and Amir Khan’s name to generate some interest his way hoping to lure people in to order his fight. Expect more mention of Manny Pacquiao’s name from Floyd Mayweather Jr..
