I am not the biggest Floyd Mayweather fan in the world, but what he did after suffering an illegal headbutt from Victor Ortiz in the fourth round was legal, albeit a cheap shot, but it was within the rules.
In boxing the referee always states that fighters must protect themselves at all times, Victor Ortiz failed to follow that rule and he paid by getting knocked out. Victor also broke another rule, he used his head and threw an illegal head butt on purpose that landed on Floyd’s mouth cutting his lip open.
I was disappointed by Mayweather’s sucker punches when Victor Ortiz wasn’t looking, but this is boxing, kissing and hugging a guy after you head butt him is not apart of the sport, and Ortiz should have known better. You can’t fault Floyd Mayweather for reacting the way he did after Victor’s illegal move. We can be disgusted by the post-fight interview with Mayweather insulting 80-year-old Larry Merchant and the cheap shot KO by Mayweather, but the knockout of Ortiz was legal.
