I saw the changes first hand when I visited Manny Pacquiao at the Wild Card boxing club in Hollywood. I witness a man who once came from humble beginnings ignore his fans when they wanted autographs and items signed, he was so enamored by his expensive fancy Ferrari that he overlooked many of us and drove away as if he wanted to get far away from the Filipinos who traveled there from other cities and waited long hours just to shake hands, get a picture taken or get a signature from their idol.
I knew already after that day that Manny Pacquiao was starting to think he was high class to us commoners. His team was already bragging of an easy victory over Juan Manuel Marquez. Freddie Roach predicted a first round knockout, the blasphemous Alex Ariza claimed God couldn’t help Marquez, and Manny was more focused on singing songs than watching video tape fights with Buboy to study Marquez.
Manny thought Marquez will just be another pushover who is already slow and old. Manny didn’t even study the fights and just went through the motions in the gym. He felt so confident because he is the so called GREAT Pacman that no one can beat him but on November 12, 2011 he was thoroughly humiliated and defeated by Mr. Marquez and given a gift decision. Plenty of Filipinos were shocked that he won, they knew he didn’t deserve it. Yet, on the post fight interview Pacquiao still insisted he won the fight.
I hope Manny learn his lesson that sometimes how you treat others will come back to you and arrogance and overconfidence can be your worst enemy. Go back to the way you were when you would wait 3 hours and sign everyone’s autographs instead of rushing away from your fans like they are germs. You mustn’t act like you are above criticism and accept your defeat.
If I were Manny Pacquiao, I would have said on the microphone after the fight, “I lost that fight, and I would like to give my WBO welterweight belt to the real winner Juan Manuel Marquez”. That would have been the honorable thing to do instead of saying you clearly won, when you know that is not true. Wake up and be humble again or else you will surely suffer again in the ring by a hungry opponent.
