WBA/IBF light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) faces mandatory challenger Lamont Peterson (29-1-1, 15 KO’s) Saturday night at the Washington Convention Center in D.C. Khan has repeatedly stated that he wants to make his fight with Peterson his last at light welterweight. Amir’s plans are to move up to Welterweight, have one or two fights there to familiarize himself with the higher weight, and then challenge WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather (42-0, 26 KO’s. The 24 year old Khan’s timetable if all goes well is to fight Mayweather towards the end of 2012.
But Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach wants him to take care of some unfinished business before he moves up toe welterweight. The unfinished business would be to fight undefeated WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (28-0, 12 KO’s).
Roach has been angered by Bradley’s mouthing off. Roach was quoted in the Daily Mirror saying:
“I fancy one more fight at 140 before moving up, but a lot depends on what happens in this fight.
“I’d like to see Amir fight Bradley. He’s an okay fighter, but his head butt is his best weapon.
“He talks a lot but he’s never impressed me. He’s not a big puncher. He’s been well managed more than anything else and I would love Amir to knock him out.”
Bradley has twice pulled out of talks to fight Khan. Amir went so far as to confront Bradley at the weigh in for his fight with 40 year old Joel Casamayor on November 12.
Bradley insists that he is not scared to fight Khan and that the fight will happen sooner rather than later although he was vague about when that would be. He said that he would have to see what direction his manager and promoter wanted him to go.
Amir in the past has expressed his impatience at trying to get Bradley in the ring with him and has indicated that he has grown tired of waiting for the fight to happen. Khan has stated that he will only believe Bradley is going to fight him when he sees him in the ring in the opposite corner.
