(March 28th) This Friday, March 30th Mastic, Shirley Long Island, New York’s heavy handed “Irish Bomber” Joe Smith Jr. continues his return to the top as a hot boxing prospect in the light heavyweight division when faces Fresno, California’s veteran Loren “The Rock” Myers in a scheduled four rounder on the undercard of Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports “All IN” fight card this Friday live on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights from the Foxwoods Casino and Resort, Mashantucket, Connecticut.
Smith, 21 years old a two time New York Gold Glove Champion was unbeaten at 6-0, 6Ko’s August 7th 2010 when he took on Lawrence, Massachusetts banger Eddie “Thunder” Caminero on the undercard of a Havoc Boxing Promotions card at Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, New York when he suffered a shattered jaw early in the second round. The rugged Smith suffering what was later diagnosed as a shattered jaw continued to fight until in a clinch in the fourth round after a glancing blow suffered shocking pain leaving him unable to continue resulting in a fourth round TKO loss.
Many ringside thought the tough “Irishman” quit but he was battling with an injury more severe than the broken jaw Ali suffered against Norton back March 2003.
It wasn’t until after almost three rounds that the usually aggressive Smith now fighting in a casual play it safe manner succumb to the pain suffering his first pro defeat of what was later diagnosed as a shattered jaw requiring extensive emergency surgery.
Eleven months later, after intensive surgery having his jaw wired and eating through a straw that “The Irish Bomber” under concentrated guidance of his trainers “The Fighting” Capabianco brothers Phil and Gerry Smith won his return bout ironically held at the scene of the crime the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn stopped Adrian, Michigan’s Santos Martinez with a brutal body shot in the second round.
