Boxncar Promotions has confirmed that Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) World Lightweight Champion Mason Menard (19-1, 14 KOs) will make the first defense of his title on June 16 at the Evangeline Downs Casino in Opelousas, Louisiana against dangerous challenger “Lightning” Lonnie Smith (14-3-2, 10 KOs).
Menard won the UBO World title in August 2011 when he impressively stopped former WBO world title challenger Joseph Laryea from Ghana in four rounds, and he has since stayed busy with clear victories in non title fights over Rynell Griffin and Herbert Quartey. Residing in nearby Rayne Louisiana, Menard can expect massive support from his loyal fans on June 16.
25 years old, two years older than the champion, “Lightning” Lonnie Smith comes from a strong boxing pedigree. His father, who also fought as “Lightning” Lonnie Smith, is a former Light Welterweight World Champion (1985), and his uncle is former Light Heavyweight World Champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad.
Now Lonnie from Las Vegas is out to emulate his dad and uncle by winning a world title, and he will be going all out against Menard to fulfill his dream. Both boxers are in for a tough challenge, and with twenty-four knockouts between them it promises to be an explosive fight.
Also on the card will be interesting bouts featuring undefeated middleweight Travis Scott (9-0, 2 KOs), undefeated lightweights Cody Richard (9-0-1, 4 KOs) and Chris Singleton (4-0, 2 KOs), light heavyweight prospect Bailey Bobbit (8-1, 5 KOs) and debutant Dylan Hollier.
“Summer Heat At The Downs”, Mason Menard vs. Lonnie Smith for the UBO World Lightweight Title is presented by Boxncar Promotions in association with the Evangeline Downs Racetrack, Casino & Hotel. Tickets are available via www.boxncar.com
