HBO Boxing After Dark will broadcast two fights on July 21, 2012 live from the US Bank Arena, in Cincinnati, Ohio, first is a 10-round welterweight bout Keith Thurman vs. Orlando Lora, followed by the main event Adrien Broner vs. Vicente Escobedo at super featherweight.
On Friday, Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KOs) failed to make the 130-pound super featherweight limit to defend his title against Vicente Escobedo (26-3, 15 KOs) and weighed over by 3.5 pounds, his WBO title was stripped from him, he was fined, and he was forced to weigh no more than 140-pounds the following morning, when Broner weighed in at 9:30 AM on fight day, he weighed in at 143 and Rolando Arellano, Vicente Escobedo’s manager called the fight off. Later on the fight was salvaged after a few rounds of negotiations between Broner’s manager Al Haymon and Escobedo’s manager they were able to come to a confidential agreement. Broner was fined $60,000 of his purse, $30,000 went to the Ohio Commission and the other $30,000 was added to Escobedo’s purse of $150,000. The WBO super featherweight belt is vacant and only Escobedo is eligible for the belt if he wins, if Broner wins he is not eligible to win his title back.
The co-feature on the HBO BAD card is Keith Thurman (17-0, 16 KOs) vs. Orlando Lora (29-2-2, 19 KOs) in a welterweight non-title bout, Marcos Maidana was originally supposed to fight the undefeated Keith Thurman but pulled out.
