Showtime Championship Boxing will air Robert Guerrero vs. Selcuk Aydin, Shawn Porter vs. Alfonso Gomez double header live from HP Pavilion, San Jose, California on Saturday July 28.
Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KOs) is a former 130-pound champion who last fought at 135-pounds, but was out due to a shoulder injury, and is back jumping the entire 140-pound weight class to fight in the prestigious 147-pound welterweight division in hopes of landing a big fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao down the line.
Guerrero, 29, was vocal about fighting pound-for-pound kings Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao last year, but his challenges were laughed at by boxing fans because many felt he was too small or hasn’t fought anyone to deserve a shot at Mayweather or Pacquiao. Now is Guerrero’s chance to prove to the world that he can be a legit challenge at welterweight for any of the top draws or champions in the division when he takes on the tough undefeated Selcuk “Mini-Tyson” Aydin (23-0, 17 KOs) of Hamburg, Germany on July 28.
Aydin, 28, is a year younger, and not well known among the American boxing fans because he has mainly fought overseas in Europe, but he is a very tough and determined fighter who also wants to prove himself as a worthy opponent for any of the top names in the welterweight division.
Also on the Showtime telecast is a light-middleweight showdown between undefeated “Showtime” Shawn Porter (19-0, 14 KOs) of Akron, Ohio and Alfonso Gomez (23-5-2, 12 KOs) of Guadalajara, Mexico.
Shawn Porter, 25, is the former sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao and an experienced amateur boxer who is slowly climbing the pro ranks, and is taking a step up in competition with the experienced Alfonso Gomez, 32, who gave the current WBC junior-middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez a tough fight before the fight was controversially stopped in the sixth round.
Watch Robert Guerrero vs Selcuk Aydin and Shawn Porter vs. Alfonso Gomez live Saturday, Jul 28, 2012 at 10PM ET/PT on Showtime.
