Lest they forget, boxing is first a sport (not business) before all else.
However I look at it, HBO’s sudden dumping of Golden Boy Promotions is a big, reckless disservice to the sport, with HBO’s management allowing personal and/or professional rift among “cats and dogs” in the business side of boxing to get in the way of sanity. HBO acted naively, thereby hitting boxing and the fans with solid blows in the face. How selfish of them.
If HBO management and Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions think that they are getting the upper hand over Al Haymon, Richard Schaeffer, Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather jr. and the rest of Golden Boy and Mayweather Promotions in the “aftermath” of this latest foolishness, they are sorely mistaken.
If HBO and Arum think that they are now able to control boxing as a result of their “astute” move of closing doors to future exciting/classic fights between boxers under Golden Boy and Top Rank, they better think again because the move can well boomerang to them.
As in any enterprise, competition is needed and paramount for business to be good and beneficial to the people. But why can’t HBO be sport and man enough to compete with Showtime Sport?
Greedy business people in the world hate competition.
They just love money.
