Once again my prediction was correct, Canelo Alvarez defeated Austin Trout by a unanimous decision and he put on an improved and impressive display of boxing. For a 22 year old champion he carried himself like he was a longtime veteran of the sport. Austin Trout also impressed me, he was one hell of a tough opponent, he fought Canelo better than he fought Miguel Cotto and gave his all in this fight, but he fell short.
What stood out to me most was Canelo’s new found head movement and defensive capabilities, he was making Trout miss and slipping his shots well. The reason why the fight was harder than it should have been was because Canelo was at a disadvantage in height and reach, he had to really lunge just to hit Austin Trout who was in backwards motion through out the fight, also he was fighting a slick southpaw, and he was not in top condition.
Canelo’s power showed in the fight after he dropped Trout with that hard counter right hand a sneaky punch that he timed after Trout missed a shot — I give credit to Trout for fighting back instead of holding on for dear life after getting hit with a shot that took his feet out from under him.
The one fight that I’ve been wanting to see is Canelo Alvarez vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr., because I feel Canelo has the best shot at dethroning Mayweather. Canelo has a high ring IQ, he also has devastating power in both hands, he’s a good combo puncher and he knows how to fight slick boxers, and let’s not forget he has an iron chin. The negative about Canelo is his stamina and conditioning, he will need to improve his gas tank if he wants to beat Floyd Mayweather. In the Trout fight Canelo could have finished him off but he gassed out and was trying to recover after throwing combos, if he had better conditioning and endurance he would have took him out.
I believe Mayweahter fears Canelo. He knows the style of fighter that will give him trouble and Canelo has that style. Some people say that Mayweather was avoiding Manny Pacquiao, I highly doubt that, Floyd would have had an easy time with Pacquiao, and Juan Manuel Marquez already killed that fight when he put Pacquiao to sleep. Before his fight with Austin Trout, Canelo asked Floyd to sign a contract promising him a fight in September if Floyd wanted to use him on his undercard to draw more viewers to the May 4th Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero fight, but Floyd chickened out and refused because he knew that Canelo would be too risky. Canelo is a real draw, and without Canelo on the undercard of Mayweather’s May 4th fight with Robert Guerrero his Pay Per View numbers will suffer. Canelo drew 40,000 fans to his fight with Austin Trout at the Alamodome in Texas, he is the only other option for Floyd Mayweather to fight if he wants to do big Pay Per View numbers. If Floyd beats Robert Guerrero and he fights Canelo Alvarez next, I will give him all the respect in the world for taking on the most dangerous 154 pound champion.
