Showtime Championship Boxing presents a double header event from the StubHub Center, in Carson, California with Abner Mares vs. Jhonny Gonzalez for the WBC featherweight title, and Victor Terrazas vs. Leo Santa Cruz for the WBC super bantamweight title.
Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14 KOs) is the current WBC featherweight champion and considered one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world, he reigned at 122 pounds before moving up to 126 and claiming the WBC title from Daniel Ponce De Leon by knockout. His next opponent and first title defense will be against the 31 year old Mexican veteran and former three division champion Jhonny Gonzalez (54-8, 46 KOs).
The opening bout for the Showtime broadcast will be 25 year old Leo Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14 KOs) an undefeated former IBF bantamweight champion fighting for his first title at super bantamweight against 30 year old WBC super bantamweight Victor Terrazas (37-2-1, 21 KOs) of Mexico. Santa Cruz is one of the young rising stars in boxing, he is quickly gaining a fan base due to his high pressure style of fighting, this bout with Terrazas will be one of his toughest tests if he beats him for the title he will rank up there with the likes of Guillermo Rigondeaux and Nonito Donaire.
