The son of famous Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez returns to the boxing ring on September 28 against tough Texan Brian Vera at the Stub Hub center in Carson, California on HBO World Championship Boxing.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is returning to the boxing ring for the first time since suffering his first professional loss on September 15, 2012 to current WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. Chavez Jr. had trouble making the middleweight limit instead of calling the main event off his opponent Vera agreed to fight him at a catchweight.
Brian Vera competed on the third season of the boxing themed reality show “The Contender” and is best known for his upset victories over highly touted Irish boxer Andy Lee, his two wins over The Contender season one winner Sergio Mora, and his recent tenth-round TKO of Ukrainian boxer Serhiy Dzinziruk on January 25, 2013. Vera is a throwback fighter who will take on any opponent ranging from light middleweight to light heavyweight, such as this bout, he accepted a late 173-pound catchweight with financial incentive because Chavez Jr. couldn’t make the 160 or 168 pound limits.
The opening bout of the HBO World Championship Boxing telecast will take place in Canada and it will be a light heavyweight championship bout between WBC champion Adonis Stevenson and former belt holder Tavoris Cloud.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Brian Vera, Adonis Stevenson vs. Tavoris Cloud airs on September 28, 2013 at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
