Undefeated WBC welterweight champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. announced on social network site Twitter that his May 3rd opponent will be hard hitting WBA champion Marcos “El Chino” Maidana, the title unification event will be held live at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, on Showtime Pay-Per-View.
Mayweather who just turned 37 will be fighting a man who is seven years younger and considered one of the hardest hitters in the welterweight division. Floyd initially put up a poll to ask the fans who they wanted him to fight Amir Khan or Marcos Maidana, on Mayweather’s poll Khan won, but Floyd took into consideration the other polls on various sites and felt the overwhelming majority wanted him to face Maidana over Khan.
This will be a clash of styles with Mayweather being the defensive minded boxer and Maidana the come forward aggressive brawler. Maidana defeated Mayweather’s protege Adrien Broner and captured the WBA welterweight belt from him last December, Broner uses a similar shoulder roll defense to Mayweather’s but Maidana was able to crack it and hurt him several times in the fight.
More information on the Mayweather vs. Maidana event and press tour will be announced soon.
