Juan Manuel Marquez returns to his old stomping grounds when he takes on former light welterweight world champion Mike Alvarado at The Forum in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday night’s HBO boxing broadcast.
The 40 year old Marquez is one of Mexico’s greatest boxers, he has fought the best and is best known for his knockout of Filipino rival Manny Pacquiao. Tonight he returns to the brand new renovated Forum, a place he is familiar with having first fought there when he was 21-years old, 12 times.
The opponent for Marquez, is a tough 33-year-old former champion out of Denver, Colorado, Mike Alvarado. He is best known for his wars with Brandon Rios and Ruslan Provodnikov. This fight will be held at a catch weight bout of 143 pounds. The winner of Alvarado vs. Marquez will possibly get a title shot at 147 pounds against the WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.
Marquez is seeking that 5th division world title to be the first Mexican in history to win titles in 5 different weight classes, that is his motivation going in this Saturday’s fight, for Alvarado he wants to add a legendary name to his resume and land a big money championship fight against Manny Pacquiao.
The opening bout for the HBO broadcast is Viktor Postol vs. Selcuk Aydin a light welterweight non title fight. The 30-year-old undefeated Ukrainian Postol is stepping up in competition when he faces the hard punching Turkish Warrior Aydin.
