The Brandon Rios vs. Diego Chaves fight was nearly canceled last minute when there seemed to be uncertainty whether or not the Argentine power puncher would be cleared to travel and obtain a visa in time for the fight.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said on Wednesday that Chaves will be heading to Las Vegas and the fight will go on.
Rios hasn’t fought since his November 2013 decision loss to Manny Pacquiao in Macau, China. Chaves who lost by KO to Keith Thurman, is coming off a 3 round TKO of Juan Alberto Godoy.
The Rios vs. Chaves main event is part of an HBO boxing triple header for Saturday, August 2nd. The broadcast will start off with Jessie Vargas vs. Anton Novikov for Vargas WBA 140 pound title, and the co-main event will take place in New Jersey, WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev will put his belt on the line against challenger Blake Caparello.
The event will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark, beginning at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT on August 2.
