Showtime Championship boxing heads to the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas for a double header broadcast headlined by WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Gary Russell Jr., and rising junior middleweight Jermell Carlo vs. Veteran Vanes Martirosyan.
At 33 years old, Jhonny Gonzalez is having a resurgence after he pulled off the upset victory by knocking out Abner Mares in one round to capture the WBC featherweight title, since then he has defended his title twice beating Clive Atwell and Mexican star Jorge Arce. Tonight Gonzalez will defend his title against former US Olympian Gary Russell Jr.
Russell Jr. is a fast boxer with some of the quickest hands in boxing and known for his explosive bursts in the ring, this will be his second chance at a world title having lost his first try against WBO featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko.
The opening fight is a showdown between rising undefeated junior middleweight contender Jermell Charlo and Vanes Martirosyan. Charlo was scheduled to fight against WBO 154-pound champion Demetrius Andrade back in December of 2014 but the bout was canceled, Martirosyan fought Andrade for the vacant WBO title but lost a unanimous decision. The winner of this bout can move one step closer to a world title shot.
Gonzalez vs. Russell Jr., Charlo vs. Martirosyan live on Saturday, March 28 at 10 PM ET/7 PM PT on SHOWTIME.
