The Bolton boxing superstar Amir “King” Khan revealed on Thursday that his next opponent will be former WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri on May 30th.
Khan (30-3, 19KOs) made the announcement through his wife Faryal Makhdoom’s YouTube channel. The two boxers are both known for their speed and length.
Algieri (20-1, 8KOs) is best known for upsetting feared Siberian slugger Ruslan Provodnikov to capture the 140 pound WBO championship. Shortly after his crowning moment he landed a huge Pay-Per-View opportunity against Filipino superstar Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao in Macau — he lost the fight via unanimous decision and suffered several knockdowns in the fight.
Khan believes Algieri is an “A class opponent”, some boxing fans believe this fight is a soft touch and easy stay busy fight because Khan still hopes to land the winner of Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao next.
Boxing fans especially in the United Kingdom are disappointed with the choice of opponent, wanting Khan to face his British rival IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook who is coming off an impressive stoppage victory over Jo Jo Dan.
Khan vs. Algieri will be held at 147 pound welterweight limit, TV network broadcast and venue location are yet to be decided.
