Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will return to the ring on April 18 against Polish fighter Andrzej Fonfara at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, televised live on Showtime Championship Boxing.
Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KOs, 1 NC) used to train under the tutelage of Freddie Roach, but recently switched trainers to Joe Goossen. Chavez Jr. has been criticized for his laziness and lack of motivation in training camp but his new trainer sees a new found hunger in the Mexican fighters eyes.
Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs, 1 NC) is originally from Poland but has fought the majority of his professional boxing career in his adopted hometown of Chicago, Illinois. His biggest moment came when he traveled to Montreal, Quebec, Canada to fight WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, although, he lost that bout by decision he made the champion look vulnerable even dropping him in the ninth round. Chavez Jr. vs. Fonfara will fight at a catchweight of 172 lbs.
The opening bout will be a junior welterweight non title bout showcasing the unbeaten knockout artist out of New York, Amir Imam, against Nicaragua’s Walter Castillo.
