HBO world championship boxing presents the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. James Kirkland bout live from the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, on May 9 with the the replay of Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao to kick off the telecast.
Canelo is the most popular boxing star out of Mexico. He has only one defeat to pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather, in a bout he felt he wasn’t yet ready for. Tonight he takes on the Mandingo Warrior, 31-year old James Kirkland in a junior middleweight main event.
Since his loss to Mayweather, Canelo has beaten the likes of Alfredo Angulo and Erislandry Lara, and Kirkland last fought in 2013 with a stoppage win of Glen Tapia.
Even though Kirkland is a Texas native, the crowd will be widely in favor of Canelo, due to a large Mexican-American population. Kirkland who has gotten his life back on track feels rejuvenated but many boxing pundits are wondering if it was such a wise decision leaving his long-time trainer Ann Wolfe in favor of a new and inexperienced trainer Gerald Tucker.
Watch Canelo Alvarez vs. James Kirkland May 9, 2015 at 9PM ET/PT live on HBO.
