HBO World Championship Boxing doubleheader features middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and flyweight champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, two of the best boxers defending their titles at The Forum in Inglewood, CA on May 16.
When Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao retire, boxing will have a new era of stars, and two of those possible stars Golovkin and Chocolatito will fight on the same card. Both are undefeated and both dominate every opponent put in front of them.
Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs), will put his WBA middleweight title on the line against slick boxer Willie Monroe Jr. of New York. This will be a very intriguing match-up due to the styles, Golovkin is a come forward, pressure fighter who breaks down his opponents until they can no longer take the power of his shots. Monroe Jr., is nicknamed The Mongoose for his elusive ability to hit and not get hit. He moves a lot and throws punches to score points rather than hurt or knock his opponent out. Can the boxer beat the puncher is the theme of this fight.
Gonzalez (42-0, 36 KOs) of Managua, Nicaragua is one of the most technically sound boxers in the sport, he fights in the flyweight division and has put on boxing displays of offensive and defensive mastery, stopping his last 8 opponents. On his HBO boxing debut he will defend his WBC flyweight title against the tough Mexican veteran Edgar Sosa.
Gennady Golovkin vs. Willie Monroe Jr. and Chocolatito Gonzalez vs. Edgar Sosa live on May 16 at 10/7 PM ET/PT on HBO.
