Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defeats Puerto Rican boxing legend Miguel Cotto on Saturday night to become the new WBC middleweight champion of the world, the judges scores were 117-111, 119-109, 118-110 .
The fight Canelo vs. Cotto fight was fought at a catchweight of 155 pounds, and a few weeks prior to the November 21 bout, Cotto who was the original WBC belt holder, lost the title due to sanctioning fees. Canelo would be the only one to fight for the title, if Cotto won he would not defend or win the belt since it was stripped.
The first round of the fight showed that the younger Canelo had the size advantage and the pressure to give the aging Cotto a problem early. Early on it was a strategic fight, they boxed and tried to time their counter shots, Cotto landed but the punches didn’t seem to move Canelo, while Canelo’s power punches would stop Cotto momentarily in his tracts.
After the decision was read, and Canelo was announced the winner, he gave a post fight interview to HBO’s Max Kellerman and said he will fight the most feared man at 160 pounds Gennady Golovkin next.
