Manny Pacquiao is nearing the end of his illustrious boxing career and transitioning into a political career in his homeland of the Philippines. A new fighter emerged who has a similar personality to Pacquiao and that is Gennady Golovkin. A boyishly charming and shy person outside the ring, with an innocent smile, and just like Pacquiao he is a beast inside the ring.
I remember years ago people laughing at the notion of a featherweight and former flyweight champion going up to 147 pounds to fight the Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya. People thought it was a mismatch and the little Filipino would be destroyed by the larger man, only for the little guy to defy the odds and put a one sided whooping on his opponent.
Many great fighters past and present, have tested the waters in the higher weights, two that come to mind are Roberto Duran and Manny Pacquiao. Duran a natural lightweight went all the way up to 160 pounds to go toe to toe with Marvin Hagler losing a decision but able to hold his own against the naturally bigger champion. Manny Pacquiao can go one step further, and win or lose, he will gain the respect of the people once again after putting on a very timid performance against Floyd Mayweather that left the casual paying fan bitter and disappointed. They thought Pacquiao would bring out the beast like he did in his previous fight against Chris Algieri, but never expected him to enter the ring with a shoulder injury that hindered his punch output and held him back from letting his hands go against Mayweather.
For Manny Pacquiao’s last fight, since Floyd Mayweather retired and refuses to give a healthy Pacquiao a rematch, I think he should try to go out with a fight against Gennady Golovkin. He can try one last time to defy the odds, prove people wrong, and win or lose, give his heart and soul in the ring as the warrior he was and always will be. I believe in him, and think he can out smart Golovkin, he can use his speed and angles and box him like he did Oscar De La Hoya. Golovkin is much slower and will have to try and catch Pacquiao, if he tries to walk him down Pacquiao can catch him with power combos. Remember what Manny did to 170 pound Antonio Margarito’s eye? Who is to say that he can’t do the same against Triple G?
Call me crazy, but I would love to see Manny Pacquiao vs. Gennady Golovkin even at a catch-weight of 157 pounds, it would be the fight of the decade.
