HBO 24/7 returns with another installment of the popular sports reality series documenting Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and gutsy British challenger Amir Khan, as they prepare for their May 7 Pay-Per-View middleweight championship clash at the MGM’s new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
At only 25 years of age, Canelo (46-1-1, 32 KOs) has already fought some of the sports big names from Floyd Mayweather, Shane Mosley and Miguel Cotto to name a few. Last November he defeated Miguel Cotto for the WBC middleweight championship of the world, and will defend it at a catchweight of 155-pounds against Amir Khan, a former champion and fighter coming up from welterweight.
The story leading up to this fight is intriguing, when Canelo vs. Khan was first announced people scoffed at it as a freak show, but Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) believes that he will prevail by using his speed and foot work to emulate Sugar Ray Leonard when he went to middleweight to beat Marvin Hagler, and Manny Pacquiao who was a huge underdog going up from lightweight to welterweight to stop Oscar De La Hoya in a huge upset win.
24/7 cameras will show us a glimpse into the training and development of each fighter before they step into the ring. Khan will undergo an intense physical transformation under the guidance of Virgil Hunter to add size and muscle as he moves up in weight, and Canelo with longtime trainers Jose Reynoso and Eddy Reynoso will focus on speed and timing to be able to catch up with the smaller quicker fighter.
24/7: Canelo/Khan debuts Saturday, April 23, 9:15PM PT after the live World Championship Boxing double-header broadcast of Gennady Golovkin vs. Dominic Wade, Chocolatito Roman Gonzalez vs McWilliams Arroyo part of HBO Free Preview Weekend.
