The Cinco De Mayo weekend boxing tradition continues on when Mexican super star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defends his WBC middleweight championship, against former light welterweight champion Amir Khan on May 7, and the mega fight will be live streamed through an online video feed Pay-Per-View broadcast presented by Golden Boy Promotions.
Canelo at just 25, has captured glory in the light middleweight and middleweight divisions, fighting the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, Carlos Baldomir, Austin Trout, Erislandy Lara, to name just a few. He is going in against the fastest opponent of his career when he faces off the Bolton, England speedster Amir Khan.
Many boxing scribes and fans have written off the fight as a mismatch, but when the two faces off during the press tour the size difference was unnoticeable, it looked more like both were equal in size with Khan being the taller one. The fight is held at 155-pound catchweight to accommodate the welterweight Khan and make it an even playing field for both.
The main concern for Amir Khan is the punching power of Canelo, can he avoid getting his chin cracked by the heavy handed red head from Mexico? Khan has a history of getting dropped and hurt in fights. The main concern for Canelo is the reach and speed of Khan, can he time the faster fighter and try and close the gap to land his power shots, or will Khan pull of the upset and outbox Canelo taking the middleweight title to Bolton?
