Mexican boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez heads to Jerry’s World, the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas home of the NFL Football team the Dallas Cowboys to fight for the WBO super welterweight title against unbeaten British champion Liam Smith on HBO Pay-Per-View and live streamed on Golden Boy Promotions online.
Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) is coming off a sensational knockout win over Amir Khan defending his WBC middleweight championship before vacating it to move back down in weight to fight WBO super welterweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs).
The fight that the boxing fans wanted to see next was a showdown between Canelo and undefeated middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin who just stopped Kell Brook, but Golden Boy Promoter Oscar De La Hoya said the fight will happen later down the line when Golovkin builds up his name to make the fight more financially rewarding similar to Mayweather vs. Pacquiao the highest grossing PPV event of all time.
Smith is being counted out as a walk over opponent, but he holds the WBO belt and is undefeated. For Smith he feels that the pressure is on Canelo and that he has the tools to out box the red head Mexican.
The undercard will also feature a middleweight showdown between two east coast fighters Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia and Willie Monroe Jr of New York. Diego De La Hoya is the cousin of Oscar De La Hoya and is currently unbeaten campaigning at super bantamweight, he will fight Puerto Rican Orlandito Del Valle. Former US Olympian Joseph Diaz will continue his perfect streak against Andrew Cancio in a featherweight bout.
